A RHETORICAL APPROACH TO THE UNDERSTANDING OF

HUMOROUS TEXTS IN READERS’ DIGEST

Abstract: This study aimed to examine: (1) the structure of the texts of humor in Reader's Digest; (2) the creation of humorous verbal according to the theory of Speech Act; (3) the creation of humorous verbal according to the Cooperative Principles, (4) The technique of rhetoric put forward by Berger used to create humor, and (5) the mechanism of humor into the humorous texts according to the General Theory of Verbal Humor (GTVH). This study used a qualitative descriptive study design, and data sources of this study were thirty texts under the heading 'Funniest Humor Se-world' version of the Reader's Digest Asia edition, published in September 2009. The results showed that (1) the structure of humorous texts according to text structure elements was in accordance with  Aristotle rhetoric that includes orientation as the opener, followed by a chronology of events, and a twist of humor as a lid, (2) Speech Act theory could describe how the figures, the characters in these texts, created and understood the humor through their communicative acts, (3) humor in the texts could be created by breaking the maxims of cooperative principles although there were no violations through maxims, (4) verbal humor in the texts were obtained by using the techniques of rhetoric expressed Berger, both based language and logic.

 Abstract: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memeriksa: (1)  struktur teks humor dalam majalah Reader’s Digest; (2) cara penciptaan humor verbal menurut teori Speech Act;  (3) cara penciptaan humor verbal menurut Cooperative Principles; (4) Teknik retorika yang dikemukakan oleh Berger yang digunakan untuk menciptakan humor tersebut; dan    (5) mekanisme humor dalam teks-teks humor tersebut menurut General Theory of Verbal Humor (GTVH). Penelitian ini menggunakan rancangan penelitian deksriptif kualitatif, dan  sumber data penelitian ini adalah tiga puluh teks di bawah tajuk ‘Humor Terlucu Se-dunia’ versi majalah Reader’s Digest edisi Asia yang terbit pada bulan September 2009. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) struktur teks humor tersebut sesuai dengan struktur teks menurut elemen-elemen retorika Aristotle yang meliputi orientasi sebagai pembuka, diikuti oleh suatu kronologi kejadian, dan humor twist sebagai penutupnya, (2) teori Speech Act dapat menggambarkan tentang bagaimana tokoh-tokoh cerita di dalam teks-teks tersebut menciptakan dan memahami humor melalui tindak humoris dan komunikatif mereka, (3) humor dalam teks-teks tersebut dapat diciptakan dengan melanggar maksim-maksim dalam cooperative principles meskipun ada yang tidak melalui pelanggaran maksim, (4) humor verbal dalam teks-teks tersebut diperoleh dengan menggunakan teknik-teknik retorika yang dikemukakan Berger, baik yang berbasis bahasa maupun logika.
